William "Bill" James Sutherland, 73, of Superior died Sunday, April 11, 2010, in St Mary's Hospice, Duluth, MN. He was born April 8, 1937, in Superior, son of the late James W and Isobel (Ward) Sutherland. He graduated with the Central High School Class of 1955 and resided in Billings Park until he entered the US Air Force, of which he was a nine-year veteran. Besides being stationed in the states, he also served in England and Korea. In 1968, he graduated from UW-Superior with a bachelor's degree.
He worked for the Hartford Insurance Co in Boston, MA for three years, transferred to Albuquerque, NM for five years and retired in 1994 from the Hartford office in Minneapolis. Bill was a gifted woodworker and had studied in England with a master carpenter. He enjoyed creating intriguingly beautiful spinning wheels. Following his retirement from Hartford he and Terry bought 40 acres in Summit, and together the family cleared the land and built a large workshop followed by the family home. Bill was particularly proud that in helping build the house, Kate found a vocation in carpentry. He supported Hope Congregational Church , helping out with their annual fish fry.
He was preceded in death by his father, James in 1985; and his mother, Isabel in 1987.
Bill is lovingly remembered by his wife, the former Theresa "Terry" Moore; his children, Jeni (Chris) Lidholm of Burnsville, MN and Kate (Mike Weber) Sutherland of Cannon Falls, MN; and James Sutherland of Superior; grandchildren, Thomas and Andy Lidholm, both of Burnsville, MN; a sister, Jeanette (Chuck) Martin of Superior; aunts, Kate Anecki and Annabelle Sullivan, both of Superior; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Committal prayers will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
