|Birth: ||Nov. 29, 1968|
|Death: ||Oct. 16, 2008|
Beloved daughter of Don Carl Bates, Jr. and Laura R. Stockdale, sister to James E. Bates, mother to Melody Y. Jones and favorite Auntie to Justine, Laura and Sydney Bates
Tanya was an extremely giving person. Even in death, her wish was to donate her organs if anything were to happen to her. As a result, two people each recieved a kidney and are living their lives free of dialysis, one person's life was saved with her heart, and the one that received her liver was able to live longer than expected; we are told that the family of that person is eternally grateful for the extended time they were able to have with their loved one. Tanya was a smoker so her lungs went to research where she might help numerous other people.
Tanya had registered to vote and she had just passed her pre-GED exam. Tanya loved animals and had a financial advisor and plans in place to attend a career college to become a vet tech.
Tanya had a pinched nerve in her back and had gone to the hospital with excrutiating back pain a couple of days before her death. She was prescribed some pills for the pain. Also, Tanya had just come to terms with being an alcoholic and was coming up on her three-month-sober anniversary. Having a fight with her boyfriend, she felt the need to drink. Those pills in conjunction with the alcohol were the cause of her death. Tanya vomitted, then aspirated; she was too intoxicated to do anything but choke and she went without oxygen for at least two hours, they say. Although she was rushed to the emergency room on Oct. 14th, she was pronounced "brain-dead" on the 16th, which is what her death certificate reads. She never regained consciousness.
Her death was unexpected and devastating to her family. Tanya had recently shared with us her excitement in the plans for the future and we were all celebrating her optimism.
In telling her story, I hold hope that this might be an example and warning to others who might find themselves in a similar situation.
Two services were held for Tanya; the first in Reno, NV was at Waltons Mortuary on October 19th, the other in Sacramento, CA at Valley Community Church on November 9th, 2008.
