Clergy, second son of Charles II de Valois-Alenšon and Maria del la Cerda. While he was Bishop of Beauvais his elder brother Charles decided to become a monk and resigned his titles and Philippe succeeded him. He divided the territories between his two younger brothers, Pierre received Alencon and Robert the county of Perche. At the request of his cousin King Charles V he was named titular Latin patriarch of Jerusalem in 1375 after being bishop of Beauvais and Reims. Pope Urban VI created him cardinal priest in 1378.
