Mr. Hughie Samuel "Sam" Burks, 94, made his transition at 10:30 a.m. on Christmas Day, December 25, 2009, in the Oklahoma Veterans Center in Norman, Oklahoma. Memorial funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, in the Arnold Moore Memory Chapel with Rev. David Mabon as the officiant. Final rites will be directed by The Arnold Moore Funeral Service in the War Eagle Cemetery in War Eagle, Arkansas at a later date. Sam was born January 26, 1915 in War Eagle, Arkansas to Lester and Edna P. (Ledbetter) Burks and moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in January 1923. He graduated from Clinton High School in Red Fork (West Tulsa) in 1933. Sam was the Northeast Oklahoma 160 lb. Boxing Champion in 1938-39-40 and Runner-up 160 lb. State of Oklahoma AAU Champion in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, sailing in First Convoy on January 1, 1942 to Australia. He served 38 months in Australia and New Guinea. Sam married Edna B. May on June 1, 1944 in Melbourne, Australia. The couple moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma in November 1945, where they owned and operated Bartlesville Storage and Moving from 1945 to 1955. Sam bought partnership in the M. Clayman and Son Pipe Iron and Metal Company in 1958 and Strike-Mor Bowling Lanes in 1962. He retired in August 1977. Sam was a long-time active member of East Bartlesville Christian Church, a 20-year member of the Downtown Lions Club, a Charter Member of Sunset Country Club, and Life Member and Past Commander and Chaplain of VFW Post 989. He also served as Chaplain of American Legion Post 105 and served as a Trustee and Chaplain with Eagle Lodge 610. Sam loved to be everybody's friend, and extended love and friendship to all he knew. He will be sorely missed, as he dearly blessed our lives. He is survived by daughter Toni Cameron and son-in-law, Randy Cameron, of Norman, loving sister, Mary Washburn, of Pikeville, Tennessee, brother, Everette Burks, of Lebanon, Tennessee, sister-in-law, Doris Burks, of Tulsa, widow of his brother, Carl, two granddaughters, Michelle Leverett of Oklahoma City and Sydney Keeter and husband, Jeff, of Justin, Texas, and as well as several nephews and nieces. In Australia, he is survived by his sister-in-law, Dorothy May, and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edna B. Burks, his father, Lester Burks, mother, Edna P. Burks, brother, Carl Burks and sister, Margaret Evangeline "Sis" Burks.
