CATHERINE DORA ELIZABETH ZUENDEL "DORCAS"
9-10-1861 -- 3-31-1887

Mrs. Zuendel died at her home on German Hill, Forest County, on Tuesday, March 31, 1887 at the age of 25 years, 6 months and 20 days. She leaves a husband and four children, the youngest of whom is a babe of two weeks, to mourn the loss of a wife and a devoted mother. Her death was very sudden and entirely unexpected. On the morning of the day on which she died, she was cheerful and bright, and appeared to be growing well and strong rapidly. Her husband was working a few rods from the house, when a little later on in the morning someone called him to come in. He came in at once, but when he reached the house she was dead. The husband and children have the sincerest sympathy of friends and neighbors in their very deep sorrow and so touching bereavement. It is comforting to know that there is a land never darkened by the shadow of the death angel, and in that land the dearest ties on earth so rudely sounded here often times, are taken up again, or supplanted by higher and Holier ones.

The funeral services were held on the Sunday following. Her body will be laid to rest in the Evangelical Churchyard on German Hill. Rev. Toby preached the funeral sermon in English, and Rev. Rhodes preached the same in German.

The very large number of people present, together with the distance which many had to come, testified to the respect and esteem in which the deceased was held. Death to her was only a gateway to life, for she lived loving and serving God.

Mr. Conrad Zuendel, of Erie Co., among the first settlers on German Hill, was in attendance at the funeral of his niece, Mrs. John H. Zuendel.
