Lexington lawyer and founding member of a local law firm Jack F. Mattingly died Sunday. He was 85. As an attorney, Mr. Mattingly specialized in tax and estate planning. In 1954, he became a founding member of Gess Mattingly Saunier & Atchinson. Mr. Mattingly was president of the Fayette County Bar Association. And he had perfect attendance for 50 years as a member of the Lexington Rotary Club. Mr. Mattingly was raised in Harlan and Hardinsburg. He attended the University of Louisville for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Marines after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. He left active duty in January 1946, but returned for two years during the Korean War. He retired from the Marine Corp Reserve in 1968 as a lieutenant colonel. Mr. Mattingly received a bachelor's degree in commerce and law degree from University of Kentucky in 1949. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Green Robertson Mattingly of 60 years. And he was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara. The funeral will be at 2 P.M. today at Christ Church Cathedral with a burial in Lexington Cemetery.
