George Johnson enlisted, age 21 years, at San Francisco, California, August 12, and was mustered-in as Private, Company A (Old), 1st California Cavalry, at the Presidio of San Francisco August 16, 1861. During January 1862 he was reported absent from his company on Detached Service at Camp Carleton, near San Bernardino, California, as a Laborer in the Quartermaster Department. Serving with the California Column, Private Johnson was one of three Union soldiers killed in action against Confederate forces at the Battle of Picacho Pass, Arizona Territory. Originally interred at the site of the battle, his remains were later re-interred in the state he served.
