"Frank H. Hartman, 85, Final Rites Set Thursday"

Frank H. Hartman, considered the "father of the burial insurance business in Mississippi" and who organized Hartman's Funeral Home here in 1906, died at the age of 85, April 5 in King Daughters Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born in Brookhaven, in January 1881, Mr. Hartman was the son of Frank Hyrum Hartman, a native of Germany, and Mary Eitel, a native New Orleanian. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Oscar H., Sr., Albert Sidney, Sr., and General Charles Dudley Hartman.

Beginning with a small firm in 1906, Mr. Hartman had pioneered the burial insurance policy in Mississippi and had built Hartman's Funeral Homes to a business valued at a half a million dollars when he retired and sold his interests in 1959. At the time he retired Mr. Hartman had watched his company grow until there were branches of Hartman's Funeral Home in McComb, Hazlehurst, Tylertown and Crystal Springs.

He was one of the organizers of the State Bank and Trust Company serving as President from 1936 through 1960. He was a Mason, a Shriner, a charter member of the Brookhaven Kiwanis Club, was active in various funeral home organizations and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, at 10 a.m. from the First Presbyterian Church with interment in Rosehill Cemetery. The Reverend Henry Hope will officiate at the services. The body will remain at Hartman's Funeral Home until time for the services.

Mr. Hartman is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Bacon Hartman; a stepson, Ellis R. Passmore of Lake Charles, La.; three sisters, Mrs. Annie Mae McGehee of Brookhaven, Mrs. Emily Henderson of Jackson and Mrs. Ruth Smith of Hattiesburg; a brother, General George Eitel Hartman of Washington, D.C., and a number of nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers will be W.E. (Bill) Lain, Jack Hoskins, Charles Pinkston, Sammy W. Smith, Dewey Jackson, Raymond Cohen, Gerald Kees, Frank McGehee.

Honorary pallbearers include Judge Tom Brady, Ferd V. Becker, Phillip Panzica, Ralph D. Martin, Ford Westbrook, R.G. Duke, E.R. Hoskins, Bob Mantz, Louie Entrican, Hamlin Case, S.B. Spencer, Marshal Case, Shelby Leggett, Lee Cooper, and W.D. Stamps.
