Actor. Born the son of Anna Crosson and Roy Bernhard Scheider in Orange, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers and Franklin and Marshall College from which he was graduated with a history major. He earned his distinctive broken nose in the New Jersey Diamond Gloves Boxing Competition. After military service, he debuted with the New York Shakespeare Festival in 1961. He then appeared in a pair of television soap operas before making his film debut in 1963's 'Curse of the Living Corpse.' After a handful of minor films, he made his mark in the 1971 thriller 'Klute' which led to a role in 'The French Connection' later that year, earning an Academy Award nomination. He also appeared in;films such as 1973's 'The Seven-Ups,' in the signature role of Chief Brody in 'Jaws' in 1975; in 'Marathon Man' in 1976; in 1979's 'All That Jazz;' which earned him a second Academy Award nomination, 'Blue Thunder' in 1983; and '52 Pickup' in 1986 before it appeared that his film career began to slow. In 1993 he appeared as the lead in the Steven Spielberg television series 'Seaquest DSV' with which he stayed for three seasons. He continued both film and television appearances throughout the 1990s and and into the new century including voice over work in documentaries such as 'Diamond Hunters' in 2001, a recurring character in the television series 'Third Watch' in 2002; 'The Punisher' in 2004; and the 2006 'Jaws' documentary 'The Shark is Still Working.' A year after being diagnosed, he underwent a bone marrow transplant to treat multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells in June 2005, but continued to work. In March 2007, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the SunDeis Film Festival at Brandeis University. He was receiving treatment for his illness at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hospital in Little Rock when he passed away at the age of 75. His final two films, 'Dark Honeymoon' and 'Iron Cross' had been completed, and were in post-production, both were slated for posthumous release. (bio by: Iola)

Inspiration to me while in Denver seeing blue thunder and jaws ,roy was the greatest of all as an individual and an actor. I will never forget him.I've always wanted to meet him but raising 5 kids alone in va kept me very busy watching his films kept me i...(Read more)
