William Flanagan, Retired Conductor

Texarkana -- William Arthur Flanagan, 74, of the Dollarway Road, a retired Cotton Belt conductor, died last night at the company hospital in Texarkana.

He had been undergoing treatment at the hospital for the past three weeks and prior to that time had been hospitalized at intervals for several years.

He was born July 23, 1885, at Raymer, Tenn., to the late Wade Arthur and Sallie A. Flanagan.

Mr. Flanagan spent his childhood in Tennessee and as a young man began his railroad career.

In 1916, he moved to Alexandria, La., where he worked for the Texas and Pacific Railway Company. He came to Pine Bluff two years later.

He was first employed in Pine Bluff by the Cotton Belt in 1918 for a period and returned to the company on February 22, 1923, to work as a brakeman. He was promoted to conductor on Dec 19, 1941, and continued in that capacity until his retirement on Feb. 2, 1958.

Mr. Flanagan was a Baptist and a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.

He was first married to Natalie Batteaste of Mobile, Ala., who died July 7, 1936. On Dec. 24, 1945, he was married to Mrs. Mamie Moore Dupree of McCrory.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Vernon Massengale of Pine Bluff and Mrs. W. A. Schoener of Grand Bay, Ala.; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Irvin Lyons Jr., of Camden; two stepsons, S-Sgt. Gerald Dupree of the Air Force at Niceville, Fla., and Pfc. Benny Dupree of the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, Cal.; three sisters, Mrs. Deedie Foster of Inkster, Mich., Mrs. Artie Blassengame of Richmond, Cal., and Mrs. Lela Gray of Tampa, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are incomplete pending the arrival of relatives and will be announced by Ralph Robinson and Son Mortuary.

The family of Mr. Flanagan is at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Massengale, at 2219 South Spruce.
