Irving William Beard died Friday, March 14, 2008.

He was born July 14, 1919, in Buffalo, N.Y.

His family moved to Clarence, N.Y., where he went to school, married Betty Amelia Jasnau, and raised three children.

Mr. Beard served in the U.S. Army, both in the European Theater of Operations as well as the Asiatic Pacific in World War II.

He later held elected office of tax collector of Clarence, served as the right-of-way agent for Erie County, and was in the real estate business.

He attended the University of Buffalo for two years.

Mr. Beard and his family moved to Anna Maria, Florida, in 1964 and owned and managed a motel for 16 years.

He restored an 1840 plantation in Pine Mountain, Ga., where he enjoyed farming.

He later moved to Tallahassee.

He was a lifelong Christian Scientist and a practitioner for more than a dozen years.

Survivors include wife Betty; daughter Elizabeth Goldsmith (Ronald); two sons, Warren of Tallahassee and William (Jennifer) of Essex, Mass; four grandchildren, Andrew Goldsmith of Tallahassee; David Goldsmith (Jessica) of Gainesville; Jordan Hoxie (Justin) of Sandwich, Mass.; and Jeffry Beard (Laura) of Farmington, N.H.; great grandchild, Taylor Hoxie; sisters, Norma and Carol; brother, Roland; and many nieces and nephews.

Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home of Tallahassee is in charge of arrangements. No service is planned. Memorial donations may be made to the First Church of Christ Scientist, P.O. Box 1875, Tallahassee FL 32302.
