Birth: Dec. 6, 1916

Niagara Regional Municipality
Ontario, Canada
Death: Apr. 16, 2006
Salmon Arm

British Columbia, Canada

My mother in law Margaret, known as Nana by family and friends, was born to Alexander Black (A B) and Margaret (Dennis) Robertson in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Her father enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in World War I, shipping out to Europe prior to Nana's birth. He was killed in action 7 months after she was born and is buried in Bully-Grenay Communal Cemetery, France. Nana's mother remarried and she became part of a larger family.

Nana enlisted in the Canadian Women's Army Corps Overseas Service during World War II and was deployed to England in Army administration. She was the last family member to see her brother, William Perry Slessor alive before she shipped out to Canada. He died on a hospital ship returning to Canada and was buried at sea. His memory is honoured at the Halifax Memorial.

Nana married Stanley Clarence McClean after the war and they raised 4 daughters in British Columbia. Nana played a large part in the lives of her daughters, sons in law, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a fiercely proud Canadian and believed we all have a social responsibility for the well being of the less fortunate in our society.

She passed away at Shuswap Lake General Hospital, Salmon Arm, BC on Easter Sunday, 2006.

You passed away on Easter Sunday and this year Easter Sunday fell on April 16th again. You were in our thoughts today as we carried on with family traditions... including savouring chocolate and butterscotch pudding.
