Birth: Dec. 6, 1925
Death: Dec. 10, 1996

Denny was a very gifted individual. He was a barber, carpenter, fisherman and a good uncle. He lived a large part of his life with his mother father and brother Delmar in a house on Fogal Road in New Middletown IN. Denny had no children of his own. When I was a little child, he would carry me around and hold me up to grandma's nick nack shelf and I would point and say "sitka" he always remembered to mention that to me later in life. He loved doing crossword puzzles and had a huge dictionary on the bookcase by his chair that he always used to complete the puzzles. He wore a fedora that always made him look sharp. My mom was convinced he was the strongest man in the world when she was little. When he was a young man he was doing some carpendtry work for Marie Eastburn and he cut his thigh open accidentally with a skill saw. Marie saved his life by putting a tournicut on his leg and holding it. Denny recovered from that. He also had polio when he was little. Denny loved to fish and he and my sister Kathie went seining for minnows and when they would get to a deep part he would tell her to breath through her eyes. He also like to hunt mushrooms and ginseng. He liked playing Scrabble and cooking. His cousin "Goo" Loren Askren would come to visit from California and they would cook pizza from scratch and boil shrimp, both very strange food for those days in Indiana! Denny traveled with the fairs working for Fike. He was remembered for being able to cut onions withoug crying. Denny met a woman named Stella Bowling and she had a little boy named Mikey. For a while, it seemed Denny would have a family of his own. It didn't work out that way, though. Denny tried to rob a bank and was put in prison. First in Indianapolis and then in Leavenworth Kansas. When he came home from there he looked healthy and fit. Later in life, Denny married a woman named Mary. Mary died from a fall when she hit her head on a table. Denny had a long time drinking problem and several times tried to quit. He had been sober for quite a while before he died from cancer. I have the bottle of wine he kept on his table that he did NOT drink. The last time I saw Denny was less than a month before he died. He talked about hopping trains to find work when he was younger. He said, "Now don't get the idea that it was romantic, it wasn't." He said he was named for an uncle who was a boxer. His uncle's name was Dennis Green, but they had named him Denny. I told him that I would see him when I came back to visit in December (I lived in Mississippi) and he said "Christmas is a long damn time away." I kissed him on the head and said, "I'll miss you Denny". He died in December. When we were kids, Denny always made up silly names for us or say or names backwards. Fattybutt (Linda Endris Summers), Skinnybutt(Kathie Lillpop Emily), Toughbutt (Richard Bradley Lillpop)Pattybutt/Tap ieram poplill (Pat Marie Lillpop Taylor), Poop Pot Paula (Paula Kay Schaffer/Chumley/Key) and a friend of his were his pallbearers. Poop pot Paula was also his home healtcare nurse as well as his 2nd cousin. Denny was a kind man and I never remember him being angry or mean.
