Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. He received the award on December 24, 1858 for his actions on 16 and 17 November 1857 while a major in the 90th Regiment of Foot at Lucknow, British India. Born into aristocracy in Highnam, Gloucestershire, England, he joined the British Army in 1845 and while serving in India during the Indian Rebellion, he and another soldier saved the life of a captain and aiding two other wounded men under heavy enemy fire during the storming of the Sikandar Bagh villa at the time of the Siege of Lucknow. He later served briefly during the Crimean War. In 1881 he retired from the British Army at the rank of lieutenant general. He was also awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal (with Relief of Lucknow and Lucknow clasps) and later he received the Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath. He died in Gorey, County Wexford, Ireland at the age of 68. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "90th Regiment. Major (now Brevet-Lieutenant-Colonel) John Christopher Guise. Date of Acts of Bravery, 16th and 17th November, 1857. For conspicuous gallantry in action on the 16th and 17th of November, 1857, at Lucknow. Elected by the Officers of the Regiment." His Victoria Cross is on display in the Lord Ashcroft Gallery of the Imperial War Museum in London, England. (bio by: William Bjornstad)
