Capt John Langhorne Brent
Birth: Jul. 4, 1843
Death: Dec. 23, 1899

Civil War Confederate Officer. In March 1862, this Kentucky native became a Sergeant in Company F of the 18th Arkansas Infantry. The following June, the men elected him Second Lieutenant. In October, 1862, he was captured during the Battle of Corinth and subsequently paroled. His promotion to Captain is dated February 18, 1863. At Port Hudson in July, 1863, he was made a POW after surrendering and was transferred to several prisons until being shipped to Charleston, South Carolina. On his arrival, he was placed in a stockade on Morris Island because Union authorities were to use him as a "human shield" to prevent fire from nearby Confederate artillery batteries. He and 599 other CSA officers who shared his fate became known as "The Immortal 600".
