Brevet Major Samuel S. Kerr, was promoted from 1st Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant,
Nov. 6, 1863; to Captain Dec 10, 1864; to Bv. Major, April 7, 1865. He died of
wounds received at Farmville, Va., May 3, 1865.

Samuel Kerr was my Great Uncle. The family story is that he was wounded in the leg at the battle of Farmville Va. and refused to allow Drs. to amputate it. It became gangrenous. He was wounded only two days before Lee surrendered and died shortly thereafter. The photo is scanned from the book Affectionately Rachael, by Barbara Tull, Great Grandaughter of Rachel Kerr Johnson.
