Harry King was
born in Buckinghamshire, England, the son of Charles KING and Rhoda SMITH. He
immigrated to Canada with his parents and sister, Fannie where they resided for
four months before moving to Monticello Twsp, Johnson, Kansas.

Harry was a
former Johnson County Commissioners in 1908 and engaged in the mercantile
business at Zarah, KS. He was a successful potato farmer in the Kaw Valley and
was active public affairs and politics. He was elected road overseer (2 years),
and has also served at township clerk (2 years) and was township trustee (5
years) in 1903 where he built the first concrete bridge in Johnson County,
located two miles north of Zarah as well as 15 new bridges, among them McCoy
Bridge, and the Burton Bridge which spans the Big Blue.

Harry was first
married in 1880 to Miss Carrie HAYNES, who died in 1882, leaving one child,
Carrie. In 1890 Mr. King was united in marriage to Miss Roxie Ballard in
Wyandotte County. They had 5 children: Samuel, engaged in Business in Bethel;
Rose resides at home; Harry, Jr., employed at Ellet-Kendall Shoe Company, of
Kansas City, Mo.; Benjamin, a student in Central Business College, Kansas City,
Mo., and Teddy lives at home. Mr. King joined the Independent Order of Odd
Fellows at Bonner Springs, KS in 1890 and was a member of the Shawnee Lodge, No.
