Cartoonist, Actor, Author. Born Bernhard Victor Christoph-Carl von Bülow. After WWII he went to Hamburg where he studied painting and graphic design. In the 1950's he invented his characteristic cartoon figures with the bulbous noses which were published in several newspapers. At that time he first used the pseudonym "Loriot". From 1967 on he was author and co-director of the TV-series "Cartoon". In 1976 his own TV series started in which he presented sketches and cartoons and mostly performed together with Evelyn Hamann. He made fun of life in families (Christmas Eve with the Hoppenstedts) politics and social conventions without ever being insulting or offensive. The series became very popular and is even today regularly shown on TV. Some sketches like the "Lottery Winner Erwin Lindemann", "Two men in a Bathtub" or "The Noodle" became a cult in Germany. For the German humanitarian organization "Aktion Sorgenkind" he created the a dog called "Wum" with his human as a mascot. The dog soon became so popular that he only appeared alone. Later he was accompanied by the elephant 'Wendelin' and an alien called "Blauer Klaus" (Blue Klaus). All their sketches were written, drawn and voice acted by Loriot and always ended with the hint to the audience to participate in the "Aktion Sorgenkind". He also appeared in two hit movies, "Ödipussi" (1988) and "Pappa ante Portas" (1991), which he directed and wrote the scripts for. For his work he received major awards in Germany, including the Grimme Award, two Bambis and the Federal Cross of Merit with Star. In the last years he lived in Ammerland on Lake Starnberg where he also died. He left a wife and two daughters. (bio by: Lutetia)
