During the Civil War Hannibald enlisted as a private in Burford's Regiment Company H, 19th Texas Cavalry for the Confederacy. He was killed trying to stop a fight between his two sons Hanny and Jim. They had been drinking and Hannibald died from a stab wound. He was known as H.D. Callen and his full name was Hannibald Dekalb Callen.
