He was serving with the Brigade Reconnaissance Force deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Lt Boyce and LCpl Richard Scanlon were killed when their armoured vehicle struck an improvised explosive device while on a security patrol in the Yakchal region of Nahr-e Saraj in central Helmand province.
Aged 25, Lt Boyce was born in Welwyn Garden City, Herts, and grew up in Bath. He studied International Relations at the University of Exeter before taking a gap year. He joined the army in 2009 and received his commission from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in August 2010. He joined B Squadron in May 2011 during the early stages of pre-deployment training and took command of 1st Troop in July before deploying in October Described as an enthusiastic, charming young officer, he was a consummate leader adored by his men and respected by all ranks. "Boycey" was remembered as a loveable rogue and a great friend. He was also an avid skier and sailor and competed in numerous regattas for the army.
Lt Boyce leaves behind his parents Martin and Andrea, sister Charlotte and girlfriend Jodie Morgan, along with other relatives and many friends. His family said, "David was honoured to be a Cavalry Officer who embraced military life with a passion. We are immensely proud of all that he achieved in such a short life and take comfort knowing that he died doing what he loved. He brought sunshine into the lives of all those he knew. David will be dearly missed by his loving family and girlfriend Jodie."
Funeral with full military honours was held on December 7, 2011 at Bath Abbey, followed by private cremation.
