Sgt Mark R Ecker of East Longmeadow, Massachusetts was born a beloved son to Mark R. and Debra Williams Ecker. He spent his early years in Chicopee, having attended St. George Parochial School. He moved to East Longmeadow in 1996 ; and graduated from East Longmeadow High School. During his Sophomore, Junior and Senior years, Mark excelled at Cross Country Sports and was co-captain his Senior year. Mark had been accepted by the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, as a Chemical Engineer Major, but in his heart, he desired to join the U.S. Army, courageously, to protect and defend our country. Mark "signed up" two weeks after his 17th birthday; while in the beginning of his Senior year at East Longmeadow High. He went to Basic Training, at Ft. Benning , Georgia in August 2003. He spent his 18th birthday in Special Forces School. In addition, he attended Airborne School, and EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) training. Mark joined the 2nd I D 1-9 Infantry Unit "Manchu" at Ft Carson, Colorado. Mark served two tours of duty, on the front lines, of what is frequently referred to as the most dangerous place on Earth for an American soldier, Ramadi, Iraq. After retiring as Sergeant , a rank he achieved at age 20, Mark returned to his home town of East Longmeadow. In addition to his parents, Mark is survived by his loving brother, Kyle and loving sister, Shannon , both of East Longmeadow; his caring maternal grandparents, Roger and Patricia Williams of Belchertown. Mark was predeceased by his dear paternal grandparents, Leonard and Irene Ecker. Mark is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. Mark's bond with his fellow soldiers, veterans, and fallen comrades will remain forever in his heart. Mark died at age 22 at Lawrence General Hospital following an auto accident.
