Composer. He is best known for the theme music of the classic 1960s television series "Star Trek" (1966 to 1969). The Philadelphia native began his career in radio during the 1940s and later worked for MGM as an arranger and orchestrator. He shared Academy Award-nominations with Lionel Newman for the films "The Pleasure Seekers" (1964) and "Doctor Dolittle" (1967), and shared an Emmy Award in 1988 for the television special "Julie Andrews: The Sound of Christmas." In addition to "Star Trek," he had other television credits with "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," "Lost in Space," "The Waltons" and "Eight Is Enough."
