Lula Inez McKinney was born in Adair county, Ky., Nov. 8, 1882 (tombstone says 1884), and departed this life at her home, five miles northwest of Hancock, March 8, 1918, aged 34 years and 4 months.
She was united in marriage to Henry Berge of Avoca March 4, 1903. To this union were born five children--Opal, Eva, Ruby, Herald and Max.
She was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Hancock in January, 1916, and since that time has been an earnest follower of her accepted Saviour. Three weeks previous to her death she was taken ill with pneumonia. All that medical skill and loving hand could do was done for her who clung to life so tenaciously, but the Good Father had willed it otherwise and the community as well as the home was saddened by the appearance of the grim reaper, Death.
She was a true friend and a kind neighbor and was sincerely loved by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. She was a devoted wife and loving mother. Her little children were her heart's companions. Her place is vacant, a void is in the home and the hearts of those who loved her so dearly--a void none other can ever fill. But she leave a rich heritage to her loved ones--a memory, most precious, of unselfish love and devotion.
She leaves to mourn her early demise the loving husband, children, a mother and father of Hamley, Ia., and five sisters, Mrs. John Plouts of Avoca, Mrs. George Nicholson of St. Charles, Mrs. Jennie Flurry of California, Mrs. Walter Erdman, and Mrs. George Bland of Kansas City.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Hancock Sunday at 10:30 a.m., conducted by Rev. Day of the German church, in the presence of a large concourse of relatives, sympathizing friends and neighbors. Interment was in the Avoca Cemetery.
