Murder Victim. He was shot in the study of the Mercer House at 429 Bull Street in Savannah, Georgia, on May 2, 1981, by the home's owner, Jim Williams, who was later found guilty of the murder of Hansford and sentenced to life in prison. Three more trials followed, with the last ending in a hung jury; 11 guilty and 1 not guilty. Williams died 8 months after the last trial, his body found in the study where he killed Danny. Hansford was said to be Savannah's most popular male escort of the late 1970s, until his murder in 1981. The murder was the subject of the successful New York Times bestseller "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" by John Berendt. Hansford was survived by his mother, Emily Bannister, who is now deceased. Hansford was also noted for his muscular build by both male and female clients and was often seen in his "trademark" white t-shirt and jeans.
