DN was an 1893 Alumni of Union College in Schenectady, NY with a BS in Civil Engineering, He was Class Historian, member of Beta Theta Pi fratenity. Pitcher for the College Baseball Team and Captain of the 1892 Team.
He started his career as a civil engineer in the Superintendent's office of the Great Northern Railway. He then went into the independent telephone work building 2000 miles of toll lines and 26 exchange offices. He sold his company to Bell Telephone and formed Tallman Investment Co, buying land and developing Towns, forming Banks and Lumber companies ahead of the Great Northern's rail expansion. At one time owning the largest animal stock farm in Minnesota.
At age 50 he learned the game of golf and went on to become one of the winningest amateurs in the games history. The photo to the right in his trophy room attests. At age '55' he played in the 1927 U.S. Amateur Championship at Minikahda Club in Minneapolis won by Bobby Jones Jr. In St Petersburg Florida one winter while playing golf he befriended Babe Ruth. After which they met twice a year in Hot Springs, Arkansas for golf. A grandaughter born in Cleveland was quoted as saying that as a child while DN was visiting he said the "Babe was coming she thought she was getting a Babe Ruth Candy Bar"
DN was posthumously inducted into the Minnesota Golf Association's Hall Of Fame in June 2010.
