From a 1950's interview with his granddaughter Nora (Tallman) Ball. John moved from Chestnut Ridge in the Town of Washington, Dutchess Co., NY with his 11 surviving children in a wagon pulled by oxen to Chautauqua Co. NY in 1848, camping along the way. He purchased a farm on the Weber-Davis Rd owned by Simeon & Phebe Vail friends from back in Dutchess Co. Nora said being a farmer that he was skillful at most trades and thus at times worked off the farm. Later in life he sometimes operated the Ferry across the lake between Stow & Bemus Point for the Ball family.

Six of his children and four of his grandchildren are buried near him. His wife Sarah Ann 'Sally' (Newton) Tallman died at her sister Jane Ann (Newton) Coffin's home in 1857 and is buried in Chestnut Ridge Friends Ground in Dutchess Co.
