In 1860, he was a blacksmith living with Samuel Brubaker in Lower Windsor Township, York County. He stood 5' 4" tall and had black hair and brown eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he first served with Co. F, 16th Pa Inf, April 25 - July 30, 1861, although his name is missing from both Bates' History of Pennsylvania Volunteers and the company register. He then enlisted in Goldsboro, York County, with Co. B, 200th Pa Inf, serving at the rank of private until honorably discharged with his company on May 30, 1865.
