John Hammonds was born in Ameilia County, Virginia according to Revolutionary War Pension Records. He was living in Halifax County, Virginia when he enlisted during the Revolution; went to Henry County, Virginia following the Revolution and lived there for 17 years from 1786-1804; he then moved to Adair County, Kentucky where he lived for 30 years from 1804-1834; he then moved to Lincoln County, Missouri in March 1834, where he had three chilren living: William, Thomas and Slade.

John Hammonds married Wealthy Ann Robinson who was born in 1763 in Kentucky and died in 1825 in Russell County, Kentucky. They had five known children, William S., Thomas, Slade, Squire John and Polly.

John Hammonds' will was made in Lincoln County, Missouri on May 20, 1834 and proved April 18, 1835. In the will he provided for his sons Thomas, John, William and Slade. There was no provision for his daughter Polly.

On November 3, 1834 in Lincoln County, Missouri he petitioned the government for a pension based upon Revolutionary War service. In the application, his name was spelled as John Hammons. His petition was rejected because he could not prove his service.
