Elias was the son of Turner Riley and Emily Fish. He was raised in Virginia with sisters Catherine, Orilla and Elizabeth, and brothers William and Robert. He was a Private in the Civil War, with Co. C, 7th West Virginia Infantry. Pension records indicate that he was wounded on June 13, 1863. On March 29, 1867, Elias married Sarah Ferguson. They settled in Clay County, Illinois to raise their family. Their first child, Albert, died in infancy in 1868. George was born in 1870, followed by Charles in 1873. Sarah died in 1875. Elias married again on Feb. 1, 1877, to Elvira Tatman Lewis. Elvira was a widow with two young sons, Rolla Leander and Edward. Together, Elias and Elvira added two more sons, Harry and William, to the family. According to census records, Elias worked as a hotel keeper during this time. During the early 1900's, the family moved west to California. Elias was widowed again in 1910, and moved into the Veteran's Home in Yountville on April 28, 1916.
