He relocated to Itawamba County, MS with his parents around 1838. He served in the 32 Mississippi Infantry during the Civil War.

He first married Nancy Walker in 1852, but she died shortly after. On November 23, 1858, he married Mary "Mollie" Livingston(e). He and "Mollie" had eight children:
Russell O. Beene (1859-1862)
Ella Eunice (Beene) Little (1861-1942)
William Obediah Beene (1865-1956)
Sallie Beene (1867-1880)
Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" (Beene) Lindsay (1870-????)
Robert Livingston Beene (1872-1956)
Samuel David Beene (1874-1942)
and Willis Dixon Beene (1877-1968).

Obie (as he was known; his son William Obediah was also known as Obie) moved his family to Texas in 1884. He wanted to go farther south and west. Life was hard in Mississippi after the war; greedy prospectors were taking advantage of people in the area, and Obie didn't want to fall victim to them. The death of his twelve-year-old daughter, Sallie, was also a painful blow to the family. He spent the rest of his life in Texas.
