Edith Moreen Brooks, 100 Hannibal Oct. 15, 1906 - Jan. 27, 2007 HANNIBAL - Edith Moreen Brooks, 100, of Hannibal, died at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at Willow Caare Center in Hannibal. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel in Hannibal. The Rev. Charles Brock and Dr. John M. Hayes will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel. Edith was born Oct. 15, 1906, in Quincy, Ill., to Eugene G. and Emma Ann Dimmitt Brooks. Survivors include one sister, Kathryn Detweiler of Hannibal; five nephews, John Detweiler, Charles Detweiler, William Gilmore, Walter Gilmore and Peter Gilmore; one niece, Edith Ann Gilmore; and one brother-in-law, Walter Gilmore. She was preceded in death by one brother, Carl D. Brooks; and one sister, Emma Helen Gilmore. Miss Brooks retired in 1972 as professor emeritus from Central Missouri State University at Warrensburg after 47 years in the field of education. Her career in teaching began at Watson School in rural Ralls County. Her career continued at Hannibal Public Schools, Quincy High School, Waukegan, Ill., Public Schools and Central Missouri State University where she taught elementary and high school vocal music in the lab school, music education and supervision of student teachers and was chairman of the Music Curriculum Committee for the state of Missouri through the preparation of the original guide and three later editions. She received her education at the following schools: Quincy Public Schools, Ocean Wave School in Ralls County, Hannibal High School, Culver-Stockton College, Kirksville State Teachers College where she received her bachelor of science degree in education, University of Missouri at Columbia, Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill., where she received her master's degree in music education and did work on her doctorate at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hannibal, Chapter J.H., P.E.O. and D.A.R. Memorials may be made to Willow Care Center. Pallbearers will be John Detweiler, Beth Detweiler, Charles Detweiler, Tracy Detweiler, Lindsey Detweiler and Sanya Detweiler.
