Hiram served as a Private with the 5 Michigan Calvary Company-C. He enlisted on January 4, 1864 in Sumter, Michigan at age 18. He was admitted on February 15, 1865 to Harper Hospital in Detroit, Michigan for reasons not listed. His discharge came on July 10, 1865. During this time he also served as a flag holder for the GRAND ARMY of the REPUBLIC. Records state he was a resident of Eastport, Michigan.
