Birth: Oct. 18, 1928
Burleigh County
North Dakota, USA
Death: Nov. 1, 2007

Roberta R. Boyd was born in Bismarck, Oct. 18, 1928, her grandfather, Robert R. Boyd's birthday. Besides sharing his name and date of birth, she shared with him the genetic trait of webbed second and third toes. Her youngest child, Marti, also was born with webbed toes, surely a sign of royalty, Mom always said.

Her parents, Chester King Boyd and Alice Funston Boyd farmed. Alice also taught school near Menoken where Mom and her six siblings grew up. Mom graduated from Bismarck High School in 1946 and attended Jamestown College, where she met Charles W. Norton. She and Dad were married July 16, 1948, at Glencoe Sloan Memorial Presbyterian Church, a church her grandfather helped build. Their daughter, Cassandra, was born Aug. 4, 1949. Charles Michael followed March 30, 1951, and Marti Kay entered the world April 25, 1956.

In the winter of 1964, after Mom and Dad divorced, Mom moved with her children to San Jose, Calif., where she worked for Newberry School District. A series of moves took her to South Lake Tahoe and Reno and in 1970, to Mt. Shasta, Calif. She returned to college and graduated in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in English from California State University, Chico. She taught school for a year in Mt. Shasta before moving to McMinnville, Ore., in 1978. In 1983, Mom moved back to North Dakota and married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Clem Dietrich. They had a wonderful 10 years before he passed away New Year's Eve 1993. Until her death, Nov. 1, 2007, Mom resided in Bismarck, with intermediate stays in McMinnville. Her home was always open and her table full for friends and relatives. She was a talented quilter, an avid reader of everything from classics to mysteries and she love crosswords - especially the hard ones.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Alice Louise Hutchison and Betty Jo Whincup; and an infant brother, Danny.

She is survived by her sisters, Carol Bower, Bismarck, and Sibyl Olson, Osage, Minn.; and her brothers, John Boyd, Deming, N.M., and Ken Boyd, Santa Maria, Calif. She is survived by her children, Cassandra Sollars (Randall), McMinnville, Michael Norton (Ruth Hardinger), Manhattan, and Marti Norton (Jim Sorenson), Mt. Shasta; her grandchildren, Jennifer Clemens (Mike Hensley), Beaverton, Jonathon Clemens, San Diego, and Sam Clemens and Mitch Horning, McMinnville; her grandson, Jaxon Hensley; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Mom was cremated and her ashes scattered on the Glencoe cemetery plot she shares with her darling, Clem.

Memorials in her name can be made to Prairie Public Radio, in Fargo, or the Heritage Museum, in Bismarck.

Memorial services will be held for her Memorial Day weekend at Glencoe.
