John was the son of Peter Jr. and Joanna Gaylord Porter Mills. The couple had eight other children.

In 1732, he married Jane Lewis, the daughter of Edmund and Hannah Beach Lewis. She was born 27 Aug 1714. John and Jane were married in Stratford.

During their married life, they lived on in the country where John was a farmer and they raised their large family. According to one source, John reached the rank of lieutenant. It must have been in the local militia before the revolution.

Jeffrey Mills tells me that John drowned in 1760 in the Housatonic River while crossing at the rapids near Bull's Tavern in Kent. His wife lived another 38 years.
