On Sunday evening, August 30, 1899, at his home in Castroville, Texas Mr. Gerhard Ihnken, died after an illness extending over a period of months.
Mr. Ihnken was born on March 19, 1918 in Groswarm, Javerland, Germany. After reaching the period of full manhood he left his native land to seek a home in America.

On the 1st day August 1846 he crossed the Medina river and cast his fortune with the small colony that then constituted the village of Castroville. On October 27, 1946 he was married to Miss Mary Pichot. From the day of his arrival at the place to the day of his death a period of fifty three years he was a citizen of this community.

He had witnessed the growth and development of the community from a camp compound of a few struggling huts, to its present development Being a man of great energy prudent and business capacity, he accumulated a handsome property. He reared a family of children, giving to each educational advantages superior to those to be found in the country at that time.

Mr. Inhken was one of the few remaining and marks in our midst and was a connection link between the town and community of today and the early colony. The large attendance of our people at his funeral attested the high esteem and respect in which he was held by his neighbors. during the declining days he was the object and care of devoted children who administered to his wants with singleness and purpose and devotion and mourned his departure with profound sorrow.

He leaves the following children: Mrs. Dwyer of El Paso, Mrs J. H. Brauer of Del Rio, Mrs Jacob Reinhart of Dhanis, Mrs Louisa Ihnken living at the place, also two sons John and Louis Ihnken living in the Chicon.
