Delmus Carver Harris was the eldest child of John W. Harris and Sarah A. Robertson. He was likely born in Fulton County, Arkansas. He spent much of his younger years in Butler and Howell Counties in Missouri and after his second marriage spent the remainder of his life in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

His first marriage took place in Howell County, Missouri. He married Nancy Jane Dodd on April 26, 1884. The following year, Jane died in childbirth. The child, a son, (named John James Monroe Harris) survived the birth and for a couple of years after his birth was raised by his maternal grandparents.

A couple of years after the death of Nancy Jane Dodd, Delmus Harris married Emily Permelia Grimes on August 1, 1888. To this union, four more children were born. They were Jessie Lee Harris, Ira Levi Harris, Hattie LaUna Harris, and Ollie Mae Harris. After 24 years of marriage, death took another one of Delmus's wives. Emily Permelia Grimes Harris died in Fort Smith Arkansas on May 8, 1912.
