He was a member of Co. E, 41st Tenn. Infantry. He enlisted Oct. 1861. He fought in the battles of Ft. Donalson, Raymon, Holly Spgs., Vicksburg, and Jackson, Miss. and many others according to his pension application. He received no disabilities. He was captured and held from July to Nov. 1863 when he escaped from federal custody in Nashville. On his pension app. he states he had not taken the oath - never. His wife, Nancy Elizabeth, died in 1901, they had 7 sons. He applied for a pension 24 March 1911. He came to live in the Tenn. Confederate Soldiers Home 24 July 1917. He did take furloughs for family visits often. He was killed in a fight with his room mate, Dr. Thomas G. Bracking, age 91, at the home over opening a window. He was stabbed in the altercation and died soon after. He was buried Feb. 17, Rev. W. T. Cunningham officiating. Only 2 sons survived him.
