Charles Samuel Bragg was born January 10, 1935, to Robert Lee and Velma Velma Leo (Whistenant) Bragg. He married Margaret Marie Bundrum, and she survives.

Journalist and writer Rick Bragg wrote about his father in the book The Prince of Frogtown (2008). Charles was a Korean War veteran who was largely absent from the household due to a problem with alcohol.

Margaret supported her family by picking cotton, doing people's laundry, and cleaning houses. The Braggs had three other sons including David Samuel, Mark, and an infant who did not survive. Son Rick won a Pulitzer Prize in 1996 recognizing his work at The New York Times.

Charles died January 29, 1975, at the age of 40 after a long illness.
