The son of JOHN and ELIZABETH (HUTCHINS) CURTISS, he married ELIZABETH WELLES, daughter of ROBERT & ALICE (HUNT) WELLES and sister of GOV. THOMAS WELLES (also my ancestor), in 1640. Two of their children are my ancestors, ENSIGN JOSEPH CURTISS and ELIZABETH (CURTISS) WELLES.
John Jr. came to America on the "SAFETY" in 1635 at about 24 years of age. This would have been 2 years after his parents came.
John, Jr.'s family was in Weathersfield in 1637/8 and had removed to Stratford by 1650 with his widowed mother & his brother, William. By October of 1669, his name was listed as one of the freemen of Stratford, Conn. He was a Sgt. in the Trainband at Stratford and served in King Philip's War.
When the town of Stratford decided to build a new Meeting House in 1678, he and his brother, William, were on the building committee and he helped with the building by carting clapboard to the site. His homelot was on the east side of High Street opposite the Commons.
Sgt. John Curtiss died at age 95 years.
