LaVerne was an avid genealogist and family historian whose shoulders many of us stand in our family history research. She was editor of the Samuel Allen Wilcox Family Bulletin for 30 years and compiled several books our family uses to search and document our research. In later years she asked the help of her daughter, Donna Hacking Erickson, to write a history of Henry Franklin Hacking, his wife Martha Elnora Wilcox, and their family. A lot of the family history collection I have for the Hacking and Wilcox families came from spending most of my vacation one year in the 1980s photo copying her records and receiving counsel from her throughout the years. She always emphasised the importance of documenting the sources. Most of what follows comes from her obituary published in the Post Register, 23 September 2000, A9; and a book about the history of the Archer and Sunnydell Wards, commemorating 150 years since the organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1830. Aunt LaVerne was the chairman of the committee that compiled the book.

LaVerne L. Hacking
Rexburg - LaVerne Liljenquist Hacking, 92, of Sunnydell, Idaho, at the home of her daughter with whom she lived for the past three years.

She was born Aug. 4, 1908, at Sunnydell, to Ezra Lorenzo Liljenquist and Mary Malinda Wilcox. The family lived in Boston, Mass., Overton, New York, Rigby and then Rexburg before settling in Sunnydell. She attended local schools and earned a teacching certificate at Ricks College. Her first teaching job was at the Archer Grade School.

On June 3, 1931, she married Clarence Marion Hacking in the Cardston, Alberta, Canada, LDS Temple. They lived in Nephi and Tremonton, Utah, before moving to Idaho, where they lived in Pocatello, Idaho Falls, and then in 1943 they moved to Sunnydell. She lived there until 1997. Her husband died Aug. 22, 1990.

An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in various callings, including Relief Society president, on the stake Relief Society board, and she and her husband served as missionaries to the Canada, Calgary Mission from 1978 to 1979. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She was known for her work and dedication to genealogy. She enjoyed traveling, reading, crocheting and gardening.

Survivors include her daughter, Marjory (Jack) Wilcock of Rigby; a sister, Anna Laurene (Charles) Arnett of Chandler, Ariz.; two brothers, Blain L. (Patt) Liljenquist of McLean, Va., and Don C. Liljenquist of Washington, D.C.; 18 grandchildren; and 34 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Erickson; infant sons, Roger Marion Hacking, John Liljenquist Hacking, and Douglas Alma Hacking; and a brother E. Ermil Liljenquist.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Sunnydell LDS Ward with Bishop Darrell Cheney officiating. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg, and Monday from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Sutton Cemetery at Archer.

LaVerne wrote these words at the end of the bio she had in the Susquecentenial book mentioned above: "We appreciate those who pioneered this area making life easier for all of us. We are grateful for our membership in the Church and have a strong testimony of its truthfulness. We enjoy living in this choice place, close to our loved family and friends."

I am grateful that I lived in the same community with Aunt LaVerne as I grew up and was inspired by her great example to continue to pursue her research goals and find the joy of having my heart turned to my fathers (see Malachi 4:6).
