John James Monroe Harris was the only son of Delmas Carver Harris and Nancy Jane Dodd. He was born almost 13 months after the marriage of his parents. Unfortunately, he was never to know his mother as she died in childbirth. After the death of his mother, he went to live with his maternal grandparents, James A. Dodd and Nancy B Hereford Dodd. His father, Delmas Carver Harris did remarry Emily Permelia Grimes on August 1, 1888. After the marriage, Delmas fetched his son from his former in-laws and resumed his parental role. Delmas and his new wife had four children which provided John with two half sisters and two half brothers. John moved with his family to Sebastian County, Arkansas prior to 1900.

John James Monroe Harris married Laura Elizabeth McCaskell on September 10, 1913 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. They welcomed their first child, Opal Hal Harris to the world on July 10, 1916. They went on to have four more children: Theo Jane Harris, Gladys Virginia Emma Jean Harris, John Delmas Harris, and Margaret Alice Harris.

John died in Fort Smith, Arkansas on July 18, 1953 from Coronary Occlusion. He was interred at Oak Cemetery on July 20, 1953.
