Death of Whately’s Oldest Resident
Miss Harriet Graves, the oldest person in Whately, died in her 92d year at the home of her niece, Mrs Mary Roote, Thursday night. Miss Graves had always lived in Whately and until this past winter at the old home in Christian lane. She was the youngest of the nine children of Oliver and Abigail Graves, all but two of whom lived to be a very advanced age, one being 99 when he died. Miss Graves united with the Congregational church over 70 years ago, and although for several years unable to attend the regular church service, never lost her interest in its work and in missions. Miss Graves was remarkably strong in both mind and body. She had until recently been able to superintend the household arrangements with the clearness of many a younger woman. Miss Graves was “a real Daughter of the American Revolution,” her father belonging to Capt Salmon White’s company of militia who marched at the request of Gen H Gates August 17, 1777, but was discharged August 19, 1777. He was a member agaoin of Capt White’s company of Massachusetts bay militia who accompanied Col Ezra May’s regiment to Saratoga September 20 to October 14, 1777. Miss Graves was a member of the Betty Allen chapter of Northampton. She was the last of her family but had many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Congregational church.
