Alex was a veteran of the Civil War for 3 years. He died at his home from an acute indigestion causing heart failure. He was 76 yrs. 5 m. and 10 days old. He was survived by his wife Martha Beltz Bitner, sons Clarence and Daniel, 1 daughter Delia who was currently living at home and was a schoolteacher of Allegheny County, and 2 grandchildren. Services were held at the St. James Lutheran Church in which he was a life long member. 13 Civil War Veterans attended the services in the church and accompanied the body to it's final resting place in the Ligonier Valley Cemetery in Ligonier.
