Ensign Patterson died when the PV-1 Ventura aircraft (29787) from VB-135 crashed during takeoff on Amchitka Island in the Aleutians. The plane caught fire, a 500lb bomb exploded and Patterson was killed. A fellow navy crewman, Alvin Don Shaver AMM3, survived but died the next day of burns. Other members of the crew were also seriously burned but survived.

Patterson and Shaver were buried in the Amchitka Post Cemetery. After the war the cemetery was disestablished and most remains were returned to their home states at the request of the next of kin. Shaver was returned to Portland, Oregon and buried at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. Patterson was interned at the nearest national cemetery which was in Sitka, Alaska.
