Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Union Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a Sergeant in Company B, 70th New York Volunteer Infantry for action on May 5, 1862 at Williamsburg, Virginia. His citation reads "Capture of a flag after a severe hand-to-hand contest; was mentioned in orders for his gallantry." He was the first member of the Union Army to be awarded the Medal of Honor for the capture of a Confederate flag.
