Spanish Royalty. Born Balthasar Carlos von Habsburg the eldest son and fifth child of Felipe IV, King of Spain and his wife Elisabeth Isobel de Bourbon, Princess of France. His parents had only one more son, Francisco, some two years later, who died shortly after birth. Balthasar's career was well documented by numerous portraits executed throughout his brief life by the court painter, Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez. His mother died when he was 14, and Balthasar died two years later, throwing the succession into crisis, and forcing his father into a second marriage, which produced five more children, including the future Carlos II.
