Obituary, East Bay Times (Walnut Creek, CA) 24 Jan 2016:
Concord, CA - On the afternoon of January 9th at the Concord home of one of her sons and surrounded by her loving family, Marian Mayo, 82, took her last labored breath. She had been in delicate health following a 2003 stroke.
Born in Boston, MA, her family relocated to Berkeley when she was three. Marian grew up there and in El Cerrito before moving to Concord in 1953 where she raised her five children. While a young mother Marian sang with the Sweet Adelines and also participated in local little theater productions. Once her children were older she went back to school attending DVC and San Francisco State for her Masters Degree in Speech Pathology.
A career in that field at the Treat Learning Center followed, but soon she discovered her love for teaching, so switched to Elementary Special Education in a classroom setting within the MDUSD. She maintained relationships with her students for years after her retirement. One of those students just this week wrote that when he was a little boy, after the death of his father and having no money for Christmas, "[she] bought us a Christmas tree and took me out to lunch…she showed our family kindness in a time of pain…"
Prior to her stroke, Marian was also very active in her church where she was Board President for many years. Her spiritual core was central to her life. She also had a life-long interest in music and studied several instruments, including the violin, accordion, piano and organ. Very creative, Marian would write skits for her students to perform. For special occasions—a staff party, camping trip or family gathering—she would often write original lyrics to be sung to popular melodies. It was just such a special song, sung with love and through tears, which filled the air as she left her son's home for the final time.
Marian is survived by her husband of 35 years, Don Mayo, her daughters Deborah and Jillene, her sons Paul, Bradly and Derrik, and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who all knew her as Nana. Marian always put her family first and her passing leaves a great void in their lives. Her only sister, Priscilla, predeceased her.
A true dog lover, the family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to East Bay Animal Rescue, 2885 Concord Blvd., Concord, CA. 94519.
A celebration of her life will be held this spring at the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church, Walnut Creek.
