Vital records of Fitzwilliam list the marriage of John and Mary on Jan. 8, 1832. John and Mary were parents of 11 children.
Horace, Lucy Ann (died as child), Harvy (died as child), Phoebe Elvira, Elmer, Hannah Jane (died as child), Melvin, George, Mary Ann, John Stuart, and Ellen. Elmer was the first child born in Illinois while the first four children have birth records in New England.
State of Illinois land records indicate that John Nichols and his brother Luke bought land in Kane County on May 1, 1845. John bought 80 acres and his older brother Luke bought 109.88 acres. John's farm is described as W half of SE quarter of Section 25, Township 38 North and Range 7 East of the 3rd principal meridian.
John was one of ten children and he had brothers named Matthew Mark and Luke. All were boys except his sister Mary.
