Old records show many different spellings - Apulderham, Apeldreham (1121), Appeltrieham (1198), Appuldram (1440) - but for several centuries the spelling used by the church and the parishioners has been Apuldram. Civic authorities use both 'Appledram' and 'Apuldram' in their records.

Father: John was a yeoman farmer, he inherited Message Farm at Bosham, Sussex from is father. Appledram farm was purchased from William Humphrey, a brewer in Chichester, not long before John's death (as mentioned in his will).

Received in will of father:

I give and bequeath unto my son John Chatfield the sum of two hundred pounds to be paid unto him, by my executors in trust, when he shall attain his age of twenty one years.
