PITTSFIELD, Mass., Feb. 8---David Johnson, 78, of 43 McKinley Terrace, former merchant, died yesterday th the House of Mercy after a long illness. He had been in failing health for a year and a patient in the hospital 10 days. He retired in 1938.
Born in West Lebanon, N. Y., May 27, 1862, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Johnson, he came to Pittsfield 60 years ago to be associated with his father in business. For a time he worked for Andrew Foote as a meat cutter. later he formed a partnership with W. K. Henry and the firm, known as Henry & Johnson, conducted a tobacco and sporting goods business many years on North street, later on Penn street. He was a member of Crescent Lodge of Masons.
Mr. Johnson was fond of sports and used to spend much time in season, whipping the trout streams. Until recently he made an annual trip to Maine for hunting and fishing.
Survivors are his wife, the former Minnie E. Lyon, and two stepsons, E. L. Henry of Pittsfield, and L. L. Henry of Detroit, Mich.
The body was taken to the Wellington Funeral Home, 220 East street, where services will be held Monday monring at 11 o'clock. Rev. H. Lawrence Show, pastor of Trinity Methodist church, will officiate. Interment will be in Pittsfield cemetery.
Members of the family will meet friends at the funeral home tonight and Sunday evenings from 7 to 9.
